This sampler was stitched in 1778 in the Netherlands, by a girl named Aaltie Schuylenborg. It is a replica of a sampler from the private collection of Kunst & Vliegwerk. The picture shows the original done in Amsterdam in 1778.
6 colors. A piece of 30 ct, (12 thr. p. cm.) cream or darker colored linen, of 20.8 “ (52 cm.) wide and 28 “ (70 cm.) high.

NOTE: On this sampler you see most of the popular symbols of that time: Top row middle: the Amsterdam crest held by 2 Dutch lions to their left the Dutch freedom maiden, carrying a hat on a stick in the Dutch garden, symbol for the house of Orange, to their right 2 symmetrical swans in a boat, symbol of love. 2nd row: 3 flowerpots, one on the left containing pinks symbol for motherly love 3 rd row in the middle the grapes of Kanaan cariers Josua and Kaleb bottom row: The I H S written on the tree of life with Adam and Eve stands for : Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus Saviour of Mankind.
